When I first heard that March is National Craft Month, I was sceptical… thinking that a there is a “month” for everything b this is just a marketing ploy to make people like me spend time and money (both of which are in short supply) on craft projects c is there that much interest in crafting beyond Girl Scouts and the Amish? Upon further research I see that it is a serious thing… Yippee
National Craft Month (NCM) is a nationwide consumer awareness program designed to draw attention to crafts and the benefits derived from craft activities. Celebrated each March by consumers and the industry alike, NCM activities and promotions take place nationally and locally.
As part of this nationwide NCM effort, retailers across the country offer special classes, demonstrations, sales and promotions.
For those of you who may not know… I was a Girl Scout for 12 years and love, just LOVE crafts. In Jr high I took Art and Advanced Art/Design class where we made some pretty cool stuff, and then I was also an Arts ‘n Crafts counselor one summer during college. So there are about a million craft project ideas floating around in my head. I tried to organize them into some sort of logical website… which has proved to be quite the undertaking. Right now Hobby Zoo has its basic structure, I just need to fill it in… so far only the Quilting section is semi-complete.
In the spirit of Craft Month, I’ll be posting some great project ideas (with photos and instructions). I encourage everyone to take some time and make something with your hands, for yourself or others… homemade gifts are a unique and thoughtful way of showing someone you care.
Happy Crafting!
